Western Star Butter Hints & Tips

Cooking with Kids

  • We all know kids big and small love stirring the ingredients in the bowl when baking and tend to put all their effort and elbow grease into it! Teach them that when making cakes and muffins, it’s important not to stir too much and get them to practise being as gentle as possible with the mixture.
  • When introducing kids to baking, look for recipes that use the quick ‘melt-and-mix’ method, where melted butter, liquid and eggs are added to dry ingredients and stirred. This way kids can see quick results and don’t have to wait for the butter and sugar to cream! Brownies and muffins are perfect for this.
  • Great recipes for young first-time bakers are scones and rock cakes that use the ‘rubbing-in’ method as they are very hands on. Simply use fingertips to rub butter into dry ingredients before adding liquid ingredients.
